Internship Introduction
To represent the culmination of my work in immigration law, I plan to create a large advertisement for the Ruiz Law Firm. A multi-faceted project, my product will reflect the firm’s impact on myself as a student, as well as the community as a whole.
Immigration Law
Wanting to study humanitarian international relations, I very often hear about immigration. But after seeing the lines outside the Department of State office while studying abroad in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic this June, I began to realize the spread and chaos of immigration. I continued to study immigration at Carleton College in July, watching documentaries, reading countless articles, and analyzing different art forms about immigration. Clearly, issues of immigration are much more complex than building a wall between two countries, and even more convoluted than simply accepting any migrant who wishes to come to the United States. My mother, an immigrant refugee from Vietnam, shares with me stories of her forced travels during her teenage years, which further inspired me to search for an internship in this field. My intended major (political science and international relations), my internship, as well as my project all revolve around public relations. Mr. Ruiz told me his idea of the large advertisement for the firm as my product, and I gladly accepted the challenge. It will bring to light the importance of immigration law, and its impact on the community.
Final Product
Specifically, my product will include a tri-fold board full of information about the law firm, which will also be my presentation platform for the Senior Expo, as well as a reflection about my time with the firm. It will feature the history of immigration law, as well as a snapshot of contemporary immigration issues (such as that of the Syrian refugee crisis and of Latin American immigration case studies). In addition, I will work on a video for the firm that will contain testimonials from past clients and a monologue from Mr. Ruiz himself. In other works, I will maintain the firm’s social media platforms (including Facebook and the official website), and feature them in my presentation. To illuminate my time at the firm, my mentor wishes for me to focus on the public relations and social media aspects of the law firm’s work.
Project and Presentation
In order to complete the product, I must contact the firm’s past clients and search for those willing to partake in the video testimonials. I must also spend time improving the Facebook page and the firm’s website (and learn how to do these things). Regarding the tri-fold board, which will also be my Senior Expo presentation, I plan to research the history of immigration law and understand what contemporary immigration law encompasses. I will also acquire firm-specific information from the three other workers at the firm. Together, this work will create my project and presentation, both of which will define the woven work that immigration law envelops and allow audiences to understand all that goes into the field.
Project Impact
Hopefully, my product and presentation will benefit the Ruiz Law Firm greatly. In the past, my mentor worked to try to improve his firm’s social standing on the internet and in the community, but my presence allows him to develop the details. My tri-fold board and presentation will serve as another advertising for the firm, helping to increase clientele. The video product also functions as advertising, and the marketing will better the firm. Personally, this research project will highlight the intricacies of creating contacts and working against time. But most excitingly, I will obtain a better understanding of the complexities of public relations and immigration law.
